1017297_10200905722901453_1996900195_nLike any big event, there are always loose ends to wrap up. In the case of Frederick Beer Week, we end up in discussions about what we can do better in the coming year, and we have to pass on the funds that we raised to those whom we have chosen to be our beneficiaries. This year, that means Team Rubicon and Goodwill Industries of Monocacy Valley.

While the board started the conversations about what we can improve at our last meeting, the latter issue will be dealt with this evening. At JoJo’s.

Feel free to join us.

Yes, for the first time since we started this little thing we call Frederick Beer Week, we are having a public presentation of the checks for the moneys we have raised. The board of directors will be at JoJo’s on East Patrick Street from at least 6:00 to 7:00 tonight, and at around 6:30 they will be presenting the traditional large novelty checks for the benefit of the press – while at the same time providing the actual funds to the beneficiaries.

Oh…and did we mention, there will be beer?

Speaking of beer – we’ve had some magnificent beers hitting the taps lately at some of our great local tap-houses. Black Diamond’s Rampage, an Imperial IPA hit the taps a little over a week ago at JoJo’s (and might already be gone), and this past Friday I had the distinct pleasure of enjoying Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout on a nitro pour at Madrones. I have so got to get my butt down to the Roasthouse.

Revival of an old idea…

So, there has been a lot of talk recently about the owners of the Frederick Towne Mall plugging in a Walmart. Not the best of ideas. There are already two in Frederick – don’t think the area really needs a third. Now, there was the idea I had when this column was still at Want2Dish; The Beer Mall. Convert the old movie theater into an draft-house cinema, the Boscov’s and whatever that other anchor store was can be converted into reasonable sized micro-breweries, you can have a food court with mini tap-rooms, and possibly even some of the chains (Fireworks Pizza, Gordon Biersch, Rock Bottom, Appalachian Brewing Company, etc), and fill it out with shops like Total Wine and ones that are focused on beer swag – church keys, tees, glassware, etc.

Sure, I like the idea, and I’m willing to admit it might not necessarily be a great idea, but it’s better than adding another Walmart to Frederick.

Tapped and Uncapped

Screw it. I’m going to keep this simple. Get your butts to Madrones while the Old Rasputin is still on the nitro pour. It was obscenely good. Rife with chocolate and coffee notes, and a beautiful creaminess, if you are the least bit fond of stouts, you need to make it over and get yourself one of these.

If I don’t see you tonight, be well, and drink good beer. I’ll be back next week with more beery goodness.

Slainte.
